Resources for Educators

Making Gay History strives to create a world where everyone understands, respects, and honors the experiences and histories of LGBTQ+ people by providing engaging and accessible entry points to their largely hidden history.

Lesson Materials for Teachers

As part of a Making Gay History (MGH) / National Education Association (NEA) Teaching Fellowship, NEA teachers across a range of disciplines developed lesson plans and supporting resources centered on podcast episodes drawn from the Making Gay History podcast. The lessons were created to provide other teachers with the context and tools to bring MGH archival audio into their middle and high school classrooms.

Staging MGH the Play at Your School

Theater teachers may also be interested in Making Gay History: Before Stonewall, a documentary theater play adapted from the Making Gay History book and podcast. A resource guide is available with background information about the play’s nature, content, and characters, as well as discussion questions and suggested pre- and post-show activities to enrich students’ engagement with the play.
